Chickens

I have 10 hens. 4 are a year old, one is 2, the other 5 are 4-5 years old. I have been getting 7-8 eggs a day. I love having them.

  1. Want a recipe the boys will LOVE? It's called DUTCH BABIES. One cup of warm milk. 3 room temp eggs. 1/4 cup flour. 2 TBS sugar and some vanilla. Stir and it will be soupy. Pour into a scalding hot cast iron skillet where you melted FOUR TBS butter. It will flow like an ocean wave and you put it in a 425 oven for 20 minutes. It's CRISPY on the edges with a thin custard on the bottom. Sprinkle confectioners sugar and pancake syrup on it. Your boys will LOVE seeing how it comes out differently every single time, and it's fun to eat.

  2. Many years ago we had our own 'chooks' and they kept us supplied with eggs. Now we have a huge house built right behind our back fence so maybe too close for us to have chicken again. Council rules I think would say "NO". I find now we don't eat as many eggs as we did then.

  3. I like having a mixed age flock too. You can gauge how many eggs you need plus keep new stock at the ready. Makes for consistency, I think.

  4. Fresh eggs, like home grown vegies, leave the store bought ones for dead. I do like contented chookie noises too. It is a long time since we have had them, and I miss them.
